How is a phobia started?

The jar shattered, she got cut, her mother is screaming, the fish is flopping and gasping , she knew it was her fault. She was going to get punished. Her wonderful fish was dying, she was bleeding. A perfect day suddenly turned horrible. Her mind closed down and told her to get away from there RIGHT NOW.
That was how her phobia was created. Anything to do with fish triggers that memory and the fear. Her mind wants to keep her safe. So it sends out the order Get Out of Here RIGHT NOW. If she does run away then her mind has protected her. As long as she stays away from fish, she will never feel that awful feeling again. A phobia is way of protecting yourself.
Using the NLP Fast Phobia Cure
The Fast Phobia cure is fast and simple. There are many variants of the basic technique, the script given here is the based on the NLP 'Magic Cinema' phobia cure.
The NLP fast phobia cure removes fears and phobias by altering submodalities. A conventional phobia cure works by exposing the phobic person to a little bit of the fear at first, then a bit more, and a bit more and so on. The fast phobia cure technique is different. It uses image alteration.
The phobic person is guided to make changes to each submodality. You can change the speed at which you experience your fear. You can alter the colors. Or you can put a funny soundtrack on the movie. By changing how you experience the fear situation, you break the link between the object and the fear. The fear is no longer automatic, so the fear goes away.
The fast phobia cure is particularly effective with phobias that are triggered by a specific thing, such as a fear of needles, fear of dentist visits, or spiders. The fast phobia cure also works for getting rid of bad memories or painful experiences from the past. You can apply the fast phobia technique to a wide range of phobias and irrational fears.

|You have got a controller which determines which movie is played from the projection box, at what speed, and you can freeze it, fast forward or reverse it. The contoller also controls the sound and the colour. With the controller you can control the size of the projected image, make it a small image or a large image. You are totally in control of what happens on the screen. You can stop it at any time.||Empower the client, puts the person in charge|
|In this cinema you are safe. You can safely view any experience, any part of your life. Nothing can happen to you while you are sitting in this cinema.||Reassurance|
|You're sitting in a seat near the middle. See yourself sitting there, waiting for the show to begin.||Dissociation|
|Next, imagine floating out of your body, and up into the projection room behind you. From there in the projection room, you can see the screen, and you can see yourself sitting down there in the seat in the middle of the cinema.||Double Dissociation|

|The first image is a picture of the situation the moment just before you get the phobia, or the trigger for the phobia, or the thing that causes the bad feeling you want to get rid of.||Experience the phobia dissociated|

The Fast Phobia Cure in the 21st Century
The original NLP Fast Phobia Cure was created at a time when most people went to the cinema every week. Everyone was familiar with the layout and most people had been in an empty cinema at some time. So it was a natural thing to use for visualization.
However, things have moved on. Most movies are watched at home now, or on the go. Movie going and even cinemas have changed. Cinemas no longer have a projection room. So imagining drifting up and seeing yourself from the projection room is not going to work.
This is where you can use your own imagination to create you own original version. Bring the Fast Phobia Cure into the 21st Century.
You can use the same basic idea, but change it to match how you consume videos and games today. Imagine lying on the couch, or in bed. You can suggest that the person gets so comfortable that they drift off into trance. Then, in the trance they dream of their fear and see it on the TV or mobile screen. There is a remote control device in their hand.
They can use this to make the video go forwards, or backwards, or whatever you want. But now add more functions to that remote control. You can get them to change the audio, or put special effects on the screen, change the colors, the size, and so on. You are not restricted to the original Fast Phobia Cure process. You can make your experience totally unique.
You can also extend it. If the person with the problem is a gamer, or watches a particular type of entertainment, then why not include visualizations of that? There is no limit to how far you can extend the basic Fast Phobia idea.
Can Phobias be Cured?
Phobias are learned disorders. Therefore any phobia can be unlearned. Treatments for phobias are usually successful, although clearing a phobia completely may take several sessions.
The NLP Fast Phobia Cure is one way to clear irrational fears, but there are many more.
Graduated exposure for phobias is done by introducing the phobic person to what they fear, a little at a time, to get them used to it. Also called 'self-exposure'.
Flooding consists of surrounding the phobic person with what they fear. For example a person with a fear of balloons would be taken into a room filled with multicolored balloons, allow them to have all their reactions, and then they will gradually realise that they did not come to any harm from the balloons.
Counter conditioning is a treatment that teaches the phobic person how to relax in the phobia situation, so that they learn to control the panic they get from their phobia.
Ordeal Therapy is seldom used today, but it does work. The idea is to get the phobic person to be exposed to the phobia just up to the point where they want to turn away and avoid it. Then the phobic person is told to do something unpleasant and to keep doing it until it gets so unpleasant that they would rather face the phobia.
A Fetish is the opposite of a phobia. You can deal with this using the Fast Phobia Cure as well. A fetish is an unstoppable attraction to some object or situation, as opposed to the fear of some object or situation. A fetish is usually a sexual attraction linked to something that is not sexual, such as rubber clothing.
